Dungeons had monsters and traps to keep people OUT. Either people didn't want grave robbers stealing from them, or territorial/evil beings appropriated the dungeons to their own designs. There usually isn't a "feeding off heroic souls" kind of deal going on. That can of course vary depending on buy Dark And Darker Gold the story/game or whatever.

I'd actually say that dungeons have a lot more sensical reasons for normal, desperate people to go into a dungeon. It can make you a lot of money. There doesn't need to be heroics or bravery involved.

That's one of the stronger suits of the archetypal fantasy of this game though, is it does inspire wonder and intrigue. It has a legacy of character and fantasy that hits deep roots, and invokes that very well through taking things to the basics. Adventurers delving into dungeons for fame buying Dark And Darker Gold and fortune.
