Earrings have existed in various different cultures for thousands of years. Moreover, the art of ear piercing has been a cultural 22ct gold earrings phenomenon for generations and is regarded as one of the first body modifications, known to mankind.

In the twentieth century, home ear piercing was all the rage amongst teenagers and young adults. It wasn't up until the 1970's that ear piercing by physicians occurred. After the hippy generation, the punk generation continued to extend the fashion of piercing, gold drop earrings  by piercing their ears more than once, as well as other parts of their body.

Today, this fashion still exists and has become relatively mainstream. Earrings in all different fashions can be found in high street stores in low cost metals, in jewellery stores and on jewellery websites using precious metals and gems.
