Jewellery - Looking at the Origins of Earrings from jeweller45's blog

Earrings have existed in various different cultures for thousands of years. Moreover, the art of ear piercing has been a cultural 22ct gold earrings phenomenon for generations and is regarded as one of the first body modifications, known to mankind.

Early images show body modification jewellery, such as earrings, being used as early as Ancient Persia. These images, derived from the ancient Persepolis, an old ceremonial capital in ancient Persia, show male soldiers from all over Persia wearing an ear ring. For ancient Persia, it was not unusual for men, particularly rulers, to be attired in jewellery and piercings. In biblical times, the wearing of earrings were also mentioned by Moses in Exodus.

From there till the 19th century, very little is known about the adoration of jewellery upon the ears. In the early nineteenth century, we saw the pierced ear disappear for a while to be replaced by the clip on. Only a small number of people, mostly sailors, wore an ear ring or earrings. The earring was greatly significant to sailors as it symbolized that the sailor had been around the world or had passed the equator. The sailors splashed out on gold earrings, as they believed that if their ship sunk and their body was found that the person who found them could take them home and give them a proper burial by selling the gold earring. It was almost an old indian gold earrings fashioned life insurance policy for sailors, whose job was very dangerous indeed.

In the twentieth century, home ear piercing was all the rage amongst teenagers and young adults. It wasn't up until the 1970's that ear piercing by physicians occurred. The twentieth century brought a renewal of the use of the earring, among men and women. The hippy and gay community especially began to pierce their ears. After the hippy generation, the punk generation continued to extend the fashion of piercing, gold drop earrings  by piercing their ears more than once, as well as other parts of their body.

Today, this fashion still exists and has become relatively mainstream. Earrings in all different fashions can be found in high street stores in low cost metals, in jewellery stores and on jewellery websites using precious metals and gems.
